ABUELO tells a story between a retired Photographer and Grandfather, Hernan Sanchez, and his Grandson, Jonathan Sanchez. Jonathan pays Hernan regular visits to check up on him but has grown distant as a result of the monotony of the visits. The two come to share an intimate moment that strengthens their relationship discussing family and facing technological/ language barriers.
ABUELO was inspired by the Director’s relationship his Grandma, or "Abuelita", along with the belief that relationships between family members are built by moments shared between one another which come together as a whole.
"We are currently living in a time when language and culture can either unite or alienate. I believe these two things shape us all in different ways but despite this we always find ways to relate to one another. I believe ABUELO, despite being rooted in a Latino language and culture that I grew up with and am familiar with, will show that these shouldn’t be things to alienate because we will find a way to relate to the story regardless. As different as we may be we can always relate to a connection to our families. Focusing specifically on the vast difference between my generation and the one my grandmother came from ABUELO looks to find a common ground between marrying the past, present, and future and much like our journey to keep motion picture film alive is attempt to do just that I feel it’s a story that is right for the time we live in."
